Welcome to The Shopland Family website

As far back as we have been able to investigate, research has shown that there are two branches of the SHOPLAND name:

  the DEVON branch

  the SOMERSET branch.

The Devon branch begins with one of the earliest SHOPLAND records of Richard SHOPLANDE/SHAPLAND (1513-1571) who was baptised in North Molton, Devon.

The Somerset branch parish records only go back to around the late 18th century due to many of the parish registers being damaged or even lost, so there is no earliest Somerset SHOPLAND ancestor from the 16th century.  However, the parish of Huish Champflower seems to have the most SHOPLAND entries with nine other parishes having a few entries so our research is primarily concentrated on these parishes.
Hi, my name is Rita Rainbird (nee Shopland) and I was born in north London in 1942. I have been researching the SHOPLAND family history for nearly 60 years, albeit with some breaks, after my father took the family on holiday to Devon to stay with distant SHOPLANDs on their farm in Broadwoodwidger. At the village fete my cousin introduced me to various other SHOPLANDs and I was curious to know why we all had the same last name, but they were born in Devon and I was born in London! Hence the beginning of a hobby that has been very time consuming, but enjoyable, all these years.

Family Trees
I have decided to remove the Devon family trees from this website due to privacy issues, but if you would like to know more about where you belong on the SHOPLAND family tree, just send me an email and, providing I have the information, I will let you have the details. Contact me by email: ritaerainbird@aol.com

I have also been working on the Somerset family trees but for the same reason as above, I will not be publishing them now.

I am usually willing to share what I know if you contact me directly, and the emphasis is on "share"! However, I have received the odd e-mail in the past which in effect asked me to "send all I know" by return and the information has been mis-used, so don't expect everything.
Whilst the Shopland name is not a rare name, it is uncommon. In the 1881 census there were 360 references in England and Wales, no references in Scotland. In the 1901 census there were 498 references, in England and Wales. These numbers do not include any variants of the name.

In September 2002, there were 613 instances of the name in England, Wales and the Isle of Mann. Take a look at this web site

Your tombstone stands among the rest;
Neglected and alone
The name and date are chiselled out
On polished, marbled stone.
It reaches out to all who care
It is too late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist
You died and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you
In flesh, in blood, in bone,
Our blood contracts and beats a pulse
Entirely not our own.
